Korean Special Romantic Days

Korean Special Romantic DaysKorean Special Romantic Days

If you are in love in Korea and your partner is Korean, then this article is a must read.

These are the Korean special calendar holidays.  On the 14th of each month there is a Korean special romantic day for couples and single people.  There are of course two additional “bonus” couple days that do not fall on the 14th. They are Christmas and Peppero Day.  These special days are becoming more commercialized with each passing year.

Valentine’s Day, White Day, Christmas and Peppero Day are widely known and celebrated by the general population.  These days are the most important and should not to be forgotten.  The other days are not as well-known and are generally reserved for the really hardcore romantics.

 Here they are:

Diary Day – January 14

On this day you are expected to exchange a daily planner with your partner or friend. Of course, you then have to keep track of special days such as birthdays and anniversaries.

Valentine’s Day – February 14

This is very different than the Western version.  In Korea, the woman in the relationship is expected to give a gift of chocolate while the man isn’t expected to give anything to his partner.

White Day – March 14

This special day was adopted from Japan.  Essentially, It is a reverse of Valentine’s Day.  The men are now expected to give the women candy. Keep in mind that many women want more than just convenience store candy.  You have been warned.

Black Day- April 14

This day is for all single people who might be depressed by their lack of a partner.  You need to eat black food, especially black noodles, “jajangmyeon(짜장면), with other single people. You can also drink black coffee and wear black clothing.  If you are not single, you do not have to follow the sad traditions of this day.

Rose Day/Yellow Day – May 14

This is a day to exchange roses with your partner as an expression of love.  Some couples wear yellow while single people are encouraged to eat curry.Evidently, it is very important to wear or eat the spring yellow color to attract a new mate.

Kiss Day – June 14

As you might be able to glean from the name, this is a day devoted to kissing.  Also seen as a good day for first kisses in a new relationship.

There are also many special events for kissers such as in Myeongdong(명동). Also, don’t miss the Hongdae(홍대) kiss battles.

Silver Day – July 14

On this day, couples should exchange silver rings or other jewelry.  A good day to make a promise of marriage or to give each other couple rings.

Green Day / Music Day– August 14

A day set aside for people to show their support for the environment and also to exercise.  Go hiking, go to the park, or just spend some time outside.  Couples should wear green if possible.  If you are single, green is also the color of a soju bottle, so meet your single friends and drink soju while grumbling about single life.

If you are a music lover, you should go to the singing room(노래방) or exchange music files/CDs.

Photo Day– September 14

On this day, you and your partner should take photos of each other and have your photo taken together many times.

Wine Day – October 14

This is a perfect day to drink wine with your partner.  Go to a romantic restaurant or wine bar and celebrate your love.  If you are single, also feel free to quaff as much wine as you’d like, within reason of course.

Movie Day / Cookie Day – November 14

Watch a movie with your partner.  Go to the theater, DVD room or just stay home to enjoy a movie.

To show your love to either a partner or child, you should also give them a cookie on this day.

Hug Day – December 14

A good day to enjoy a tight hug with someone you love. You can hug your partner, family or friends, but I don’t suggest trying this with strangers.

BONUS Days! (Not on the 14th)
Peppero Day – November 11

A day on which to give the people you care about boxes of peppero, which are stick-like chocolates that resemble the shape of the number 11.  This one is important and growing in popularity each year.

Christmas – December 25th

This day is a little bit different than the Western version. It is not a day to be spent with families, but instead one that is traditionally spent with one’s partner.  You should exchange gifts and celebrate by going somewhere special to eat delicious food.
